Coming to you from the self proclaimed “Black Dirt Capitol of the World,” my name is Hannah Hilsabeck, your 2015 Miss Rodeo Iowa. A true rural Iowa country girl, I kick my Justin’s off in Winterset, IA, where I graduated from Winterset High School. This past December, I received my Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural Education with a teacher certification, and an Animal Science Degree with an equine option from Iowa State University.
I grew up on a hobby farm in Madison County and was involved in several activities during high school including gymnastics, Speech and Debate Club, Pep Club, National Honor Society, varsity football and competition cheerleading, 4-H and FFA. I had the experience of showing rabbits, sheep, pigs, cattle, and horses, but from a very young age horses became my passion. I joined an equestrian drill team, Central Iowa Dancing Hooves, was a horseback guide one summer on trail rides through Rocky Mountain National Park and Roosevelt National Forrest with SK Horses, Inc., and worked for the Iowa State Fair Entry Department as the equine specialist and horse barn office manager. During college, I volunteered and worked at the Iowa State University Horse Barn.
It was during my junior year of high school I had a life-changing event when I attended the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, IN. It was there that I met Amy Wilson, Miss Rodeo America 2008, and had my picture taken with her while she was signing autographs. It was that single event that motivated my quest to win Miss Rodeo America and become an ambassador of rodeo. I did countless Internet searches for anything I could find (images, pageants, clinics) to figure out what it took to become this ambassador.
Since the very first day that this Miss Rodeo America journey began, I have been helped by many people and learned so much along my trail to Miss Rodeo Iowa. I was honored and blessed to win the 2007 Madison Co. 4-H Junior Cowgirl Queen, 2008 Winterset FFA Senior Cowgirl Queen, 2009 Abdallah Shrine Rodeo Queen, 2009 Dallas Co. Fair Rodeo Queen, Miss Teen Rodeo Iowa 2010, and Miss Sidney Iowa Rodeo 2013.
I was crowned Miss Rodeo Iowa in September at the Tri-State Rodeo in Fort Madison, IA. My lady in waiting period was quite busy as I was also completing my student teaching. But January 1, 2015, I hit the ground running. My travels have already taken me to Colorado, South Dakota, Florida (twice), Minnesota and across much of Iowa in four short months. I am excited to attend 9 of 10 Iowa PRCA rodeos this summer and the ProRodeo Hall of Fame Inductions where Sidney, Iowa’s Championship Rodeo’s committee will be inducted with the class of 2015.
What I am most excited about this year is the platform I have been able to start on social media entitled, “From Ag. Scenes to Rodeo Queens.” This has allowed me to use my degree in education and animal science and my passion to educate the world on all things rodeo and agriculture related. While I enjoy spending time with family and friends, one of my favorite activities is just spending time trail riding at home. My future plans include teaching in a high school agriculture education program and returning to college to receive my Master’s Degree in animal reproduction and genetics. I would eventually like to work in the animal agriculture industry.
