Queens by Luck; Friends By Choice

This blog was written by guest blogger Lolly Klug who was Miss Rodeo Nebraska 1956, Lolly shares the story of her and her friend Dallas Hunt George who was Miss Rodeo America 1956.

When you put a “city girl” – Dallas and a “farm girl”- Lolly- near horses things just happen even living miles apart.

As teens we competed against each other at open and AQHA shows and rodeos. This friendship grew outside the arena. We had to compete against trainers and adults. Sure was fun placing above them.

Next came Rodeo Queen contests. Dallas was hard to win over. Lolly was happy to see her friend winning. Dallas was the 1st Miss Rodeo Nebraska in 1955 and then again in 1956 and then went on to be Miss Rodeo America 1956. Lolly was in nursing school in Dallas’ home town of Lincoln, Nebraska.

In 1957 Lolly was about to finish her nursing degree when the Nuns let her take her days off to compete for the title of Miss Rodeo Nebraska. Dallas handed over the Miss Rodeo Nebraska 1957 title over to Lolly.

It was a greater honor to have Dallas- Miss Rodeo America 1956- hand the Midwest Division of Miss Rodeo America Buckle to Lolly at the Aksarben Rodeo in Omaha in 1957.

The rest is history. Miles never kept the friendship apart, the two have gone to state pageants to judge and have helped at the Miss Rodeo America Pageant for many years. Our friendship is a special treasure few get to experience in a lifetime.

Who knows—we may be having walkers vs. wheelchair races at the Miss Rodeo America Pageant someday.

Both of us are better with reins in our hands than handle bars. We plan to be at the Miss Rodeo America Pageant as volunteer helpers as long as we can get our boots on!
